How are wrinkles formed?

Persistent small muscle contractions, which happen when our faces form expressions, cause wrinkles and expression lines to form. Of course, the older we get, the more deeply ingrained in our skin these lines are. But did you know that prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun (photo ageing) is a big cause of premature ageing? Cigarette smoking and pollution also hasten the ageing process by producing free radicals which attack the skin. Rapid weight loss is also a cause of wrinkles as the volume of fat cells that cushion the face is drastically reduced. This causes the skin to sag.

Type of lines found on the face:
Dynamic wrinkles
Dynamic wrinkles are wrinkles that occur when we use our facial muscles to form expressions. When we smile or frown, our muscles contract and cause our skin to wrinkle. While we are young, our skin is more elastic and resilient, and is able to spring back to its original position when our face is at rest. As we get older, the dynamic wrinkles remain on the skin, forming static wrinkles.

Static wrinkles

Static wrinkles are the wrinkles, creases and folds that are present when our face is at rest, or when we are not forming any facial expressions. With age, there is a decrease in the youth-giving substances, like collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid, that give the skin support, structure and volume. This is why static wrinkles develop as we get older. This loss of skin structure, resilience and volume means that the skin is less able to spring back to its initial position after we make the facial expression. Thus, static wrinkles and folds start to form and stay on our face.
Forehead lines
These are the lines and folds that form on the forehead due to the effects of gravity, muscle action, loss of skin volume and of course, environmental damage like smoking and sun exposure.
Frown lines (Glabellar lines)
Frown lines can make us look more grumpy than we feel. Like all other wrinkles, they develop as we age. They are found above the nose, in between the eyebrows.
Crow's feet / eye wrinkles
These are wrinkles and fine lines that appear around the eyes. Whether we're squinting under the sun or just expressing ourselves, our eyes are constantly in motion. Over time, the daily muscle activity around the eye area, cause these lines.
Bunny lines
These are lines on your face that are particularly obvious whenever you scrunch up your nose.
Nasolabial folds
Nasolabial folds are the lines and grooves that run from the nose to the mouth.
Marionette lines
These are lines that run from the corners of the mouth, down to the chin. The term is derived from a marionette, with those same signature facial lines.
Popply chin
This is when the texture of the skin around the chin looks like orange peel, a phenomenon caused by the mentalis muscle.
